    Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Low-Level Laser therapy (LLLT) is another adjunct therapy used to treat hair loss. For many years its benefit in hair transplantation was controversial with only limited studies. Recently however, more studies have shown statistically significant benefit in increasing overall terminal hair densities in men and women with a laser comb device compared with placebo. The effect of hair regrowth have not been shown to be as profound as the other options, but can be beneficial in those patients that cannot tolerate other treatments, or for those who are just seeking additional help with prevention of hair loss. The exact mechanism of action is unknown but one hypothesis is that laser light in the visible red light wavelengths of ~630-660 cause a bio-photochemical reaction in the mitochondria, (similar to photosynthesis) increasing mitochondrial production of ATP. It seems most effective on men and women with early thinning and remaining miniaturized hairs. LLLT is a great option for women because of the mere fact that there are a limited number of treatment options available to them. Finally, some physicians are using LLLT during the post-operative period to help speed up scalp healing and recovery. A recent study by Jiminez, Hordinsky, et al showed a statistically significant increase in terminal hair density after 26 weeks of LLLT.
