  • POTENTIAL ADVANTAGES OF FUE

The main advantage of FUE is that it does not involve the creation of a “linear” scar. It is therefore particularly useful for the following type of patients:

    1. For patients who for one reason or another want the option to wear their hair very short (<1cm) and not have any evidence that a procedure was done. In general the linear scars produced with traditional strip FUT are thin and easily hidden by the remaining donor hair, especially if kept

    1. Another use for FUE is in the patients who have already had strip harvesting and now have a tight scalp that would make more strip harvesting difficult. FUE can be used to obtain more grafts.

    2. Another application of this technique is to camouflage a widened linear donor scar from a prior hair transplant procedure. The combination of FUE and SMP into a scar can be very successful in many patients.

    3. Another group of patients FUE is appropriate for are the young patients who currently need only a small amount of grafts in an area like the hairline but in whom the future degree of hair loss is not known. Some young patients in this position state that IF they did progress to total loss of hair on the top of their head they would rather just shave their head than have to go through with more surgeries to keep up with the loss. They are just not sure they can commit to more surgery in the future if needed. With FUE they retain the option to stop and shave their head if they have only done 1-2 small procedures.

    4. A final possibly more controversial use of this procedure is in the Type 7 patient with limited, fine, donor that would potentially become more see through if any transplants were done. Typical strip surgery can only create a very conservative look on these patients and sometimes it is not worth it for the potential scar. Many of these patients are simply not candidates. However if they only want light covering of hair that is conservative then perhaps the way to obtain that hair in these patients is with FUE so the potential scar is not a problem. In addition the combination of using low density FUE with SMP to create a shaved look is a potential approach in some people.

After 3 months only I already have full hair coverage in all the affected areas and don’t need to use the hair clips like I used to do for many years. Please give my beast regards to Dr. Shapiro and the team...”Read More
