What is SMP?
Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a medical tattooing technique that creates the appearance of fuller, thicker hair by replicating tiny hair follicles on the scalp. Professional SMP technicians apply microdots to the scalp using specialized pigments and techniques, mimicking natural hair growth and effectively camouflaging thinning areas.
Anyone can get SMP hair treatments, whether you want the look of a close-shaven head, added density to thinning hair, or coverage for scarring. It’s safe, low-maintenance, and very effective for creating a natural look of thickness and fullness without surgery.
The SMP Technique: It’s Not Your Regular Scalp Tattooing
The Tricopigmentation (STP) technique, developed by Milena Lardi, goes beyond traditional tattooing. The method requires precision in pigment formulation, application, and layering to achieve a natural look.
Here’s everything you need to know about the SMP technique:
SMP Pigments
Tricopigmentation pigments are typically organic and designed to gradually fade within 6-24 months. Unlike traditional tattoo pigments, SMP pigments are formulated to prevent color change as they fade, meaning they won’t shift to unnatural tones like blue or green.
Depth Control
The pigments in Tricopigmentation are deposited at a shallow, controlled depth within the dermis to reduce the risk of color migration or “bleeding.” This careful depth control is crucial for creating the look of discrete hair follicles rather than large, blended areas of pigment.
Each dot is meticulously applied to ensure uniform depth, which helps maintain a consistent look and fade rate across the scalp.
Needle and Machine Specifications
STP uses ultra-fine needles designed to mimic the diameter of a single hair follicle to create the natural look you want. The fine needles prevent ink spread and help ensure that each “dot” remains crisp and well-defined.
Tricopigmentation machines operate at settings specifically calibrated for this technique, managing speed and pressure to achieve optimal pigment placement and avoid excessive trauma to the scalp.
Multi-Session Layering Process
The three-session approach in scalp micropigmentation creates natural, lasting results by building density in stages, allowing for healing, and refining details.
Healing time between sessions lets us see how the pigment settles, so we can make any needed adjustments, ensuring the result looks natural and blends perfectly with your hair.
First Layer: Base Foundation
The initial session lays down a base of microdots, establishing coverage and neutralizing the contrast between scalp and hair. This session serves as the groundwork, giving a subtle, uniform look that sets the stage for subsequent layers.
Second Layer: Density Building
The second session involves applying additional dots between the initial ones, increasing the overall density. This layering process is critical to mimic natural hair patterns and avoid a “solid” appearance.
Final Touches: Refinement and Detailing
The last session fine-tunes details, enhancing density in specific areas, refining the hairline, and adjusting for any fading that occurred during the healing process. This allows for a soft, realistic finish that can be customized based on client preference.
Customized SMP Hairline Design
To create a natural effect, the STP technique often incorporates soft, feathered edges along the hairline rather than sharp or solid borders. This customization is particularly beneficial for clients who want subtle results that blend with their natural hair growth patterns.
Fading Process and Reversibility
Unlike permanent SMP treatments, Tricopigmentation fades entirely within 6–24 months, depending on skin type, lifestyle, and exposure to sunlight. The temporary aspect of this technique allows for flexibility, as clients can adjust their look over time.
The gradual fading process may require annual touch-ups to maintain the appearance, but clients also have the option to let it fade naturally if they choose not to continue treatment.
How Much Does SMP Cost?
Our pricing typically falls between $800 and $2,400, depending on the specific requirements of the procedure. This investment provides a non-surgical solution to restoring your hair and confidence.

SMP Before And After
SMP Case 1: Creating a Buzz Cut/Shaved Look
After 3 SMP sessions, this patient’s hairline looks well-defined, and the scalp has a natural, fuller appearance, creating the look of a closely shaved head.
SMP Case 2: SMP Scar Camouflage
This patient had a visible FUT scar. Here, SMP was used to camouflage the scar, giving a fuller appearance at the back of the scalp. Now, he can confidently wear his hair short without anyone noticing the scar.
SMP Case 2: Adding More Density
This patient had noticeable thinning at the hairline, but SMP added thickness and definition for a naturally full look—all without a hair transplant.
